‘Patoldanga r aamra kau jon bikkhyato chaar murtimaan.’ ‘Ami kothay?’ ‘Thanda ghar e chalo Mama dekhacchi.’ ‘Amar jano mone hoilo Mama r barite aayisi.’ ‘Hum log Ramgarh jayenge, le chalenge?’ ‘Kaathberaali!’ ‘Kaathberaali toke charh maarlo!’ ‘Company! Attention!’ ‘Ghajang fu, ebaar khabo toke, giley giley giley, khabo toke.’ ‘Mahish na, eibaar baagh! Dui number.’ ‘Sudhu saap kano, gandaar o Hari naam kore.’ ‘Amaar naam Jhanturam.’

Once upon a time, there were four famous students in Patoldanga High School. They were Kebla, Habul, Pelaram and Tenida. Tenida was the leader of that gang of four persons. The Maths exam ended. ‘Chattrish number correct answer likhte toke ke boleche?’ Pelaram was a better student among them! Kebla invited Pelaram, Habul and Tenida at his house for dinner as their exams are over now. It was really a tough task to fulfil the hunger of Tenida, the foodie.

‘Kamon holo?’ ‘Amar bhaipo bolchilo ebar jaa question esechilo taate gadha goru o pass kore jaabe.’ Point to be noted that Tenida was expert in failing in exams in every class for at least 1 year, as he always liked to remain in school to enjoy the school life. Kebla’s elder sister was stunned to see the eating style of Tenida. Kebla’s mother was aware of the fact that Tenida is a foodie and eats too much food. They started planning to go for a short trip.

Pelaram suggested about having a trip at Liluah. Tenida turned down that proposal. Habul suggested about having a trip at Bardhaman. ‘Haan re Habul, Bardhaman e Sitabhog, Mihidana; Kg kato kore re.’ Tenida wanted to have a trip far away from Kolkata. Kebla’s meshomoshai started telling some stories like a professional storyteller. ‘Ekta Mosh er lyaj. Paliye galo bote, kintu oi lyaj ta amar haate roye gache.’ After dinner, they sat on the terrace to gossip.

‘Kothay jaowa jaaye bolun toh?’ Kebla’s meshomoshai suggested them to go to Hazaribagh and again started telling a story. This time the story was of a tiger that remained unconscious for two and a half days. Kebla’s mother was not in a mood to allow Kebla and his friends to go for a trip in Hazaribagh forest area, but, Kebla’s meshomoshai gave them the motivation to go for a trip. ‘Chele manush bolcho kaake!’ Finally, they went to Jhuntipahar to live in Roy moshai’s bunglow.

The train journey started. Swami Ghutghutananda boarded the train and entered inside their compartment. ‘Ami Muri naambo.’ ‘Hau suiya paren, anek ratri hoiya giyase.’ ‘Jogosarpo sunecho?’ In that night, Tenida and his teammates ate sweet rasogollas. In the next morning, when the train stopped at Muri Junction, Bhoja started shouting, ‘Guruji!’ Swami Ghutghutananda went down from the train and Tenida dropped that pot of Jogosarpo on the platform.

They reached Jhuntipahar, a dense and haunted forest area. They started singing inside that forest. ‘Oi bujhi baagh aasey matkaate ghaarh; oi bujhi bhooth aasey matkaate ghaarh.’ Tenida became senseless after seeing Jhanturam. Was it just a type of acting by Tenida? ‘Jhanturam er chehara taa bhooth er maton hole hobe ki, raandhe bhalo.’ Habul found an old harmonium under the bed of that room.

In the evening, Tenida started singing,’Bharat amar Bharatbarsha, swadesh amar swapno go; tomaate aamra lobhiya janmo dhanyo hoyechi dhanyo goh. Tomar upama tumi ee toh maa, tomar roop er naai go sesh. Aandhar rajani bhoy ki janani, aamra bachabo e mahaan desh. Rabindranath, Vivekananda, veer Subhash er mahaan desh.’ In that night, the ghosts came to frighten them. Kebla was courageous of them and chased the ghosts.

‘Bhooth o manush ke bhoy paaye, nahole Kolkata e bhooth er dekha paaowa jaayena kano?’ ‘Konodin sunecho bhooth e bidi khaaye?’ Kebla had doubts about the existence of real ghosts. Pelaram got slapped by whom and why? ‘Aamra Habul Sen ke vanish koriyachi.’ Where was Habul? The searching operation started. Pelaram slipped on a cow-dung and entered inside a secret tunnel. Thanks to that scorpion, otherwise, Gajadhar would have kidnapped Pelaram too.

The secret tunnel led to a place which was well connected with a National Highway and a river. ‘Taah picnic korte esechen eto dure?’ Who was Seth Dhunduram? Tenida, Pelaram and Kebla entered inside that tunnel and found Habul. But as per Habul statements, what do Gajadhar, Ghutghutananda and others print here inside this tunnel? They came out of the tunnel and followed the car. An FIR got lodged at the Ramgarh Police Station. ‘Company, March Forward.’

‘Khaan na; khaan, bahut badiya cheez ache.’ Pelaram fell asleep to have a horrific dream. Tenida came to the spot and poured a bucket of water on Pelaram to wake him up. ‘Pakhi jeh paaliye galo.’ The Police jeep followed the car. ‘Left Right, Left Right, Left. Company, Halt! Company, Arrest.’ On what criminal charges, the three culprits got arrested? Which three people also arrived at Jhuntipahar bungalow? Why the Police Inspector appreciated the bravery of “CHAAR MURTI?”

Let us go back to Bengal just after the partition of Bengal province in 1905 based on communal basis which was implemented under the governance of Lord Curzon. In those times, a wife of a traditional Bengali Hindu family was not allowed to come out of her in-laws house, but, Nikhilesh gave full freedom to his wife. Hindus of India started the Swadeshi Movement to teach a lesson to the British Government, but, alas, the Indian Muslims didn’t participate in the Swadeshi Movement. Muslims acted like poisonous snakes and started killing Hindus in Bengal.

Sandip was the famous Swadeshi leader in Bengal at that time. He influenced many Swadeshi people of India to burn down all the western items. Bimala also joined the Swadeshi movement, but, slipped a little bit to have an extra-marital relationship with her Swadeshi leader. Nikhilesh’s widowed sister-in-law always had a soft corner for Nikhilesh! Was Nikhilesh aware of Bimala’s extra-marital affair? Why Sandip returned back gold coins and jewels? ‘Aamake banchte hobe toh! Ekhono je onek kaaj baaki.’ Why and how Bimala became a widow in “GHARE BAIRE”?

Jungle Tour! Ok! Four friends headed towards Palamau forest range in a four-wheeler. Why Hari’s ex-girlfriend slapped Hari once? Oh! Come on! Forget about all those complex love theories; just enjoy the scenic beauty of this forest. Take help of a local person! ‘Tui amader sathe jaabi, aaye bakshish debo.’ As per the rules written on the Notice Board, any visitor in the forest must seek permission from the District Forest Officer (DFO) of Daltonganj for staying in that forest bungalow.

‘Arrey khaath ka kya jaroorat hain?’ They stayed their forcefully after convincing the Chowkidar that he will not get sacked by the DFO of Daltonganj. ‘Tor naam ki re?’ Sekhar forgot to bring a shaving blade. ‘Daari ta kamacchish kano? Ekhane ke dekhche ke?’ To have a bath, you have to take out water from a deep well. Ha ha ha, there were some spectators to watch the bathing style of Sekhar. ‘Ei ki ekhane, jaao, fot.’ ‘Sekhar ta ke sange naa aanle thik jome naa, tai na!’

It’s time to walk inside the dense jungle! ‘Dekhish! Haati r paal na ese pore.’ ‘Erokom sunset kothao dekhechis konodin?’ Local alcoholic drinks inside the Palamau forest range have its own characteristics, though it is of cheaper brand and quality. ‘Ei Hari! Dyakh, pechone dhyakh.’ Tribal girls of forest always enjoy the local alcoholic drinks after sunset and they always love to dance in their traditional style. A peculiar type of beauty exists within those tribal blackish female bodies.

In those days, young men used to become patriotic after drinking alcohol! ‘Saare jahan se accha, Hindustan hamara.’ In the next morning, Sekhar spotted two young women. Hence, Sekhar took Sanjay’s shaving blade. Lakha gave the address of those two young women. Aparna spotted the four strangers while playing badminton with her sister-in-law. ‘Amra toh manush.’  Any Bengali person always feels happy after meeting another Bengali person outside Bengal. ‘Bhethore asun.’

Let us have the introduction please. ‘Ami Sadashiv Tripathi. Ami Sekhar Sen; Ami Ashim Chatterjee; Ami Sanjay Banerjee.’ ‘Accha apnader sathe aar ek jan chilen na?’ ‘Church e gache, beraate.’ ‘Apnaara badminton khelben?’ Ashim visited Aparna’s house. Women are always mysterious. ‘Naa aapnake thik porishkar bojha galo na.’ ‘Seta ki khub dorkaar chilo?’ Ranger came and warned them, ‘Apnaara jebabhe eta ke occupy korechen, seta r kono khoma nei.’

Sekhar gave some money to the tribal girls to do the cleaning and control the big hanging clothed fan. Duli was cleaning the house that Chowkidar gave the objections. As per forest office rules, not a single tribal girl is allowed to enter inside the Forest Bungalow. Why Hari started beating up Lakha? Who came to give back the purse to them while they were bathing in front of deep well? ‘Have a nice trip.’ ‘Purse feroth diye galo, ekta thank you dili na.’ Drunkards danced well at night!

‘Taaka ta gune niyechen toh?’ ‘Haan.’ ‘Eyi, haan ki re!’ ‘Amra tahole gachtala r byabostha ta sere feli?’ The DFO came to the spot and was very angry on them. ‘Kintu apnader khetre exception ta karbo kano bolte paaren ki? Just give me one good reason.’ Aparna knew that DFO beforehand! ‘I didn’t realize they were friends of yours!’  Memory game started. Sanjay felt some infatuation towards Jaya and he brought two pillows from the room. Who won the memory game?

They went to visit the tribal fair at a nearby tribal village of that jungle. Sekhar took some money from Ashim to play gambling in that fair. Hari spotted Duli and took her inside the jungle to entertain her. Jaya was also hungry for sex but did Sanjay satisfy her hunger? Was Ashim in love with Aparna? Who injured Hari? Time has come to go back to Kolkata! ’Ei Hari, kamon achish?’ Boiled Eggs! Chowkidar’s wife was sick! Who closed the gate to end the chapter of ‘ARANYER DIN RATRI?’
